In Memoriam: David Austin

I love roses; they are my favorite flower. So it is with great sadness that I note the passing of a single man who revolutionized the rose world: David Austin. His obituary in the New York Times can be read here. Photos to honor his contribution to modern roses:

In Celebration of Science

I haven't published a science-related post in a long time, but today, we must celebrate the long-wished -for realization of a dream: the real definition (for now) of a kilogram.  The New York Times summarizes it far better than I could here, in The Kilogram is Dead. Long Live the Kilogram! This won't affect kitchen scales or, sadly, my bathroom scale, but for nerdy scientists working in physics and astronomy and astro-engineering and on the theoretical edges of many disciplines, it will affect their theories and instrumentation. So, today, let's celebrate the mighty yet lowly kilogram, and those scientists who spent decades working to more accurately define it. Long like the K!

Recent Meals

I haven't done a meal post in a while, so here are some shots of what's recently been cooking in the Nest.

New Year's Eve dinner centered on a cheese smorgasbord--goat with raspberries, sheep, brie, and Stilton with peaches; artichoke dip; black-eyed peas; salmon and brisket.

Butternut squash galette.

Thanksgiving dinner, with carrots cooked with lemon and herbs.

Kielbasa with cabbage, potatoes, spinach, and navy beans.

Turkey meatballs with a green bean salad.
